Jamaica’s national consultations were led by The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ), which is the national focal point on Migration and Development in Jamaica. In collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), efforts extended to raise awareness of the ongoing global discussions on the Global Compact for Migration.
Public consultations on the Global Compact for Migration were centered on the following six areas namely:
- Human rights
- Drivers of migration
- Development and Diaspora
- Smuggling and Trafficking
- Irregular migration and labour mobility
The consultative process premise presupposes that Jamaica’s Policy on International Migration and Development as and its Migration Policy Implementation Plan provide a national perspective on the areas to be addressed.
